Thinking about getting a new dog?

Doggleganger

Doggelganger Website

Choosing a dog is no easy task. You want to make sure you choose a dog that fits your personality, your looks, your home — in other words, a dog that is a total match for you.

Doggelganger is a website that does just that. If you go there and upload a photo of yourself it will match you with a pet that looks like you. Granted, all of the animals are in New Zealand, so actually adopting one of these pups might not be practical. But how far are you willing to go for the perfect dog?

Just watching the software run through its search algorithms was well worth a visit.

When I ran a photo of me, Doggelganger paired me with Chester. Quite the handsome fellow, isn’t he?

Weirdo Wednesday – May 4, 2011

Here we are in May and in the aftermath of Bin Laden’s demise it’s been a virtual weirdo-palooza. To give the walking around weirdos a rest for a few weeks, I am declaring May to be Weird Wide Web month; a total look at some of the weirdest sites the web has to offer. And trust me… they weren’t hard to find.

The first place we’ll look at is http://www.hatsofmeat.com/ — a site dedicated to the meat hat wearing folks in society. I hope this is a fairly niche website.

Be sure you take a look at the users galleries and see if you possibly spot some of your meat wearing friends. I particularly liked the surf and turf headdress.

It seems like every candidate for weird website was a very niche site, with the exception of maybe Engrish.com.

Take for instance, www.catsthatlooklikehitler.com. What’s even weird is since its inception people around the globe have actually submitted 6131 cats that look like Hitler.

The last stop on the world wide web today is a place called HorribleLogos.com where they sell you a logo for $5, guaranteed to suck. The tag line on their website is — Drawing bad Logos for Beer Money Since 2010.

You have to admire the entrepreneurial spirit. I can tell you first hand with a quick look at their website. They do specialize in sucky logos.

Nest week we’ll look at a few more websites and I won’t have to go anywhere near the porn sites. There’s plenty of weirdness in the normal world.

Flashcards!

Dig back – way back – to a time you were waist high to Miss So-and-so, and your favorite part of the day was recess. I’m talking about days of red-rover, dodge ball, and hop scotch. To give you an idea of how far I have to dig back, I was in the third grade when President Kennedy was shot in Dallas. For a kid who’s life revolved around school and television, I was pretty well screwed for over a week. We only had three channels and for a solid week all you had was Kennedy stuff.

Seems like I can remember the teacher pulling this big box out of her drawer and inside the box were these cards.  On the cards were some simple math problems and the first one to figure it out raised a hand and gave the answer.  I also remember that I had my own box at home for studying goze-n-tahz.

Four goze-n-tah sixteen, four times, and three goze-n-tah twenty-one, seven times.  Are you with me so far? Flash cards – I’m talking about flash cards.

Once of my writing resources is online at Dictionary.com. They just launched a new component to their site. You guessed it – Flash Cards, or should I say Flash Cards on Steroids. I’ve been playing around with these for a few days and have found some of the challenges to be tough as a nickel T-Bone.  Topics span a wide range from the Arts to Recreation and Sports, Science, Religion, History, Business and the Economy, and several others.  They have card sets designed to help prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT, PSAT, ACT, GMAT and more.

I’ve heard the best way to keep your mind sharp is to use it for something other than Mafia Wars, Dallas Cheerleaders, and which celebrity checked into treatment.  If you are looking for a challenge, you will find it here.

For my writer friends this is a perfect exercise for shoring up that massive vocabulary. One card set included such words as – abstruse, acrimonious, cursory, exacerbate, innocuous, and nebulous. I found the exercises fun and challenging. Check it out!
