Happy Birthday Marines

US MarinesNovember 10, 1775 — The Continental congress commissioned Captain Samuel Nicholas to recruit two battalions of ‘Marines’ for maritime and land duty in the Continental Marines. Captain Nicholas is regarded as the first Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Today marks the 236th anniversary of the founding of the Corps. From that day to this the few and the proud have stood for our freedom and against those who would take it from us.

In battles fought in the Spanish-American War, in Europe, The Pacific, Korea, Vietnam, right up to the war on terror, the Marine Corps is rich with culture, history, and tradition.

Semper Fidelis distinguishes the Marine Corps bond from any other. It goes beyond teamwork – it is a brotherhood and lasts for life.

Latin for “always faithful,” Semper Fidelis became the Marine Corps motto in 1883. It guides Marines to remain faithful to the mission at hand, to each other, to the Corps and to country, no matter what.

Becoming a Marine is a transformation that cannot be undone, and Semper Fi reminds us of that. Once made, a Marine will forever live by the ethics and values of the Corps.

There is no such thing as an ex-Marine.

A Marine is defined by Honor, Courage, and Committment.
