Marvin Gaye’s version of “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” is a landmark hit for Motown and sits at #80 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.
On April 1, 1984, Gaye’s father fatally shot him after an argument that started after his parents squabbled over misplaced business documents. Gaye attempted to intervene, and was killed by his father using a gun that Marvin Jr. had given him four months before. Marvin Gaye would have turned 45 the next day.
His best known songs include “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” (1968), “Let’s Get It On” (1973), and “Sexual Healing” (1983). Marvin Gaye was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
